Emma and Laura fought with determination to win silver on the final day of racing at the Rio Velodrome in the Women’s B 3,000m Individual Pursuit with a time of 3:31.569, three seconds behind British tandem of Lora Turnham and Corrine Hall. “To win silver is a great achievement. It felt rough and hard out there and it did not come together how we could have liked it to,” said Emma. “Our qualification round this morning was great and we did a time we were really happy with. “We have two more events coming up, both on the road and we are now going to focus on these and continue to give it our all.” Earlier in the day the duo qualified second-fastest with a time of 3:28.563. The silver medal adds to their previous competition successes in which they achieved two gold medals, a silver and bronze in just over two years of competition. Emma was born and bred in Dargaville. She rides in the stoker position, or rear seat of the tandem cycle, with her seeing pilot Laura in the front. They first met at a para-cycling talent ID camp at the start of 2013 and their coach paired them to compete together. After Emma completed her schooling she went on to university and got interested in cycling, so she moved to Cambridge in the Waikato to pursue the sport. “I like to have goals and to aim for the top and I always want to be the

We already do the fruit in schools and healthy eating programmes so this works in well with our lessons. The students had lots of fun and increased their jumping skills with Diamond, Saphaea and Waima taking out the best skippers of the day,” said principal Margie Ormsby. p Anne Mitchell from the Holy Trinity Anglican church in Dargaville has helped create the church’s annual Kaipara Kaleidoscope calendar as a fundraiser for the sixth year. Consisting of photographs taken by local photographers, 350 calendars are printed with many people purchasing them as gifts for family and friends overseas in countries such as Italy, Alaska and England. “Each year we fundraise to cover the operational costs of the church. Holy Trinity historically is significant to the great community of Dargaville, being built in 1878,” said Reverend Brendon Wilkinson.

Anti-Analogue is a joint art show presented by Mangawhai artists Jeanette Vickers and Mark Graham. Jeanette is known for her experimentation with digital photography, always finding niches that have not been explored and Mark aka Phobos had his beginnings in the back of a sixth form photography class, where he discovered graffiti. Jeanette says it takes her five years to exhaust possibilities with her camera and then she moves on to another experiment. Her recent work presents her artistic skills. “Modifying the flow of water through techniques I have been experimenting with, the pieces are extremely bright and colourful, which is consistent when photographing water,” she said. “One particular photograph, Sunbirds in the Tropics, will be approximately one metre by 80 centimetres printed on archival canvas.” Mark is a digital and mixed media street artist. In his sixth form class he was spookily influenced by graffiti and was scared by its relentlessly addictive nature, hence the name Phobos which is the greek god of fear. “After several run-ins with the law, I made the move to paint in a studio rather than the street, still capturing the rush and the thrills that graffiti can bring,” said Mark. Heavily influenced by Graffiti and other subcultures such

as hip-hop and tattooing, his creativity is constantly developing and forever evolving into his own style. Mainly focussing on the female figure, he has branched out and created two portraits of males. As an attempt to further his evolution, the entire show has been created digitally and will be a run of ten A1 prints per piece. The show runs from September 24 until October 3 at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery — next to the old village hall in Moir Street. ¢

Rail carts success Dave Selby and John Hansen of Dargaville Rail and River Tours hosted their 1,000th passenger on the rail carts tour this past week.

Steve Bailey from Kamo received a basket of goodies when he went on the carts with his friend along with another group of men from Palmerston North, Tauranga and Hamilton that were on a ‘retired mates trip’ up to the Kaipara. Mr Selby says it was a pleasure seeing their 1,000th passenger arrive and they are extremely pleased with the success of their venture which they opened on December 12 last year. “It is great to see the tour bringing people to the Kaipara specifically to participate in the tourism activities Dargaville and surrounds have on offer,” said Mr Selby. “Out of the 1,000 customers, 125 have been locals and the rest have been tourists from across New

It is great for the local economy and we are hoping that this year just gets better for local tourism.” He says they encourage visitors to participate in other local attractions too such as the Kumara Box. Mr Bailey said he was absolutely impressed with the tour. “I was over the moon to be the special passenger. The trip was awesome. “The fact that you can get out there on the rail track and be hands on in the cart was really fantastic and you see so much from the track,” said Mr Bailey. ¢

Historic landmark for sale u by Ann Morgan

A piece of Dargaville’s history is up for sale. The old Post Office building on the corner of Normanby Street and Hokianga Road is designated as a national historic building at 102 years old.

It was one of the most substantial structures in Dargaville when it was built and with its four-faced clock tower, has been the subject of many local and travelling artists and photographers. It was opened on September 14, 1914 by Mayor Mr H Hammond. Dargaville lawyer G N Hayes donated the four-faced clock in 1925 in honour of Charles Darling, his late law partner and other servicemen from the Northern

Wairoa who were killed in World War One. King Bros Construction Ltd carried out renovations in 2010 when the building was seismically strengthened. It still has many of the original features including red mail boxes and the post master’s office. The clock tower is in working order. The building is for sale through Ray White Jean Johnson Realty. ¢

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir, Very many thanks for your newspaper reporting profiles of the mayoral candidates for the Kaipara District Council. I ask Mr Gent via your newspaper why he has not stated that he is the chairman of BNZ partners Northland.

The BNZ is one of the banks who loaned money to the KDC and continue to do so. Mr Gent should declare his position as he may be in a conflicted circumstance. Yours faithfully, John Black, Maungatoroto

I wish to respond to Mr Black’s question in his letter to the Lifestyler I have no role with the BNZ either professionally or personally. About 2011 I was appointed northern regional chairman of BNZ partners, a role I held for two years. In that role I provided mentorship to the Northern Manager and his team and attended BNZ functions from time-to-time. During my tenure in that role I was appointed the chair of the Kaipara Review Team. We were tasked with writing a report on the state of KDC for the councillors and the then minister David Carter. In that role I attended one meeting in Auckland with the ANZ and BNZ banks, both funding banks of KDC. Also in attendance was Steve Ruru, then CEO of KDC, and staff from the Department of Internal Affairs. The purpose of both meetings was to present KDC’s financial projections. Both banks wanted comfort that KDC was solvent (this was at the peak of the rates strike). A simple measure of solvency is that the organisation can pay creditors as they fall due and its assets are greater than liabilities. At both

meetings I declared the role I had with the BNZ even though it was irrelevant to the matter under discussion. Since that time KDC’s financial woes have improved to the point that the majority of its borrowings are from the Local Government Funding Agency, not banks. I am unaware what funding is through banking lines but understand it to be minimal. Mr Black very correctly should ensure individuals standing for council declare any conflicts. I think he should ask all candidates whether they are in arrears with their rates, as that is a huge conflict in my view. Ensuring that KDC management are pursuing rates arrears while being one of those parties would be untenable. That of course doesn’t exclude the right of individuals to take KDC to litigation, that is everyone’s right, but while that process works through, rates should be paid. In the extreme, if none of us paid our rates there would be no KDC. Greg Gent Mayoral Candidate

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Attention Kaipara Commissioners. Approaching the entrance to Harding Park, the most striking visual feature is that of the masts of the Rainbow Warrior reaching skyward. Those masts represent a major incident in New Zealand’s external relationships with other nations yet do not rate a mention on the new signs that have been erected for visitors. People come from far and wide to view this memorial of international sabotage, yet tourist information signage ignores its presence and places

more importance upon the location of picnic tables. Inside the museum is a magnificent display about the Rainbow Warrior and the events surrounding its destruction, and the clandestine events that followed the ship’s sinking weave a tale of intrigue befitting of an adventure novel — a story that will linger in the memories of any who see it. The original signs denoted the location of the masts, so why has this fascinating piece of New Zealand history been ignored on the new notice boards? Mitch Morgan, Kaipara

LOCAL BODY ELECTION 2016

Why voting matters

Voting papers start to arrive this week and Anna Curnow standing for Kaipara District Council says many people will have already decided who they are voting for.

p Anna Curnow

“Others will be undecided or will wonder why bother; does it really matter?”, she said. “For many, local government can seem irrelevant but it affects each of our daily lives. “Each time you walk on pavements or you drive on roads you expect council to keep them in good condition. If you live in one of our urban areas you flush toilets and turn on taps that are connected to council run services. At a meal in a cafe or restaurant, it is council that ensures the establishment is qualified to serve safe food and drink. “If you decide to build or add on to a home, it is council who administers

regulations to ensure buildings are safe and fit-for-purpose. “When you walk in a park or reserve or visit a library it is council that maintains the facility. “Each year you receive a rates bill and the decisions made by the council you elect, dictate how much that bill is. Voting is the time when every adult has the chance to influence the decisions that are made in our name. “I feel this is probably the most important election Kaipara has ever had. Please make sure you vote and take the time to think about who is best qualified to help achieve your ambitions. ¢

ANNA #1 Candidate for West Coast Central Ward

Seeking the mayoralty “My candidacy boils down to respect for democracy,” said independent candidate for the Kaipara District Council mayoralty, Bruce Rogan, who has served on the council previously and led the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association in a long running dispute with council over rates. “True democracy defeats the excesses of corporate power. The counter to the corporates is community empowerment and my commitment and integrity,” he added. “Some people say ‘you can’t fight city hall’. I think democracy is our means of change for the better. No council should behave in a way that causes distress for ratepayers. “A defining feature of my candidacy is reviving democracy in this community. Democracy is the basis of our civil society. My great-grandfather Judge John Rogan, the founding judge of the Maori Land Court, who lived in Te Kopuru, passed on to me his legacy of seeking fairness for all through disputes resolution. Our family is proud of its strong historical and ongoing links to the Kaipara. “As mayor I will transform Kaipara into a district that works for its people. I would not have to work alone. Thousands of Kaipara ratepayers want a better deal than they are getting. “With the help of the government’s Crown Manager, I will do everything

Balance and sustainability Governance experience Sarah Kennett wants to see Northland thrive economically while protecting its unique environment.

For the last 30 years Northland Regional Council candidate Mark Vincent, with his wife Cindy, have lived on their rural property in the Kaipara.

“Being a farmer I understand the need to balance the books with the need to achieve business or organisational goals while ensuring environmental sustainability,” she said. “I want to ensure we invest in infrastructure and manage and enhance our environment. “I want to see Northland promoted as a leading destination to businesses and visitors, so we can benefit economically and socially. “I believe council needs to involve the communities that know what works for them in its decision making. As a councillor I would look to build on and enhance established relationships between Maori and local government. “Our Kaipara farming business aims to protect and enhance the environment and I strongly believe we need to fence off rivers and streams, while giving farmers time to do that. “For ten years I was communications manager for Northland Police, developing proven communication skills which will support the council’s move to be more open and transparent. “I have leadership and financial skills through being on the Northland

“I have a range of skills and experience which will make me the best person to represent the Kaipara area and to act in the best long-term interests of the Northland region,” he said. “Firstly, I have governance experience, which includes serving two terms on the board of the Otamatea High School and currently I am a commissioner on the District Licensing Committees for both the Kaipara and Whangarei district councils. In 1987, while visiting my brothers farm, I had the opportunity to see honeybees in action and moving to Kaiwaka in 1988, I began a beekeeping business. From 1991–97 I was secretary of the Kaiwaka Residents and Ratepayers Association and was pleased to persuade the mayor, Peter Brown, to establish the 0800 help desk for the KDC. “Among many issues, this election is about the roads, water quality, sewage, the harbours, the mangroves, the elderly, the young and our future. Consultation during the 1990s until the early 2000s barely existed in Otamatea. From this October a culture of consultation needs to be embedded in the council by accessibility, transparency and accountability. p Adrian Bonner “Otamatea roads need to be graded properly. Debbie Evans is a well-known ‘voice for the community’, a public servant in the Kaipara for more than 20 years who is armed with six years governance experience. She is seeking re-election onto the Northland District Health Board. Debbie’s first directorship came when she was officially appointed by the Minister of Health to serve a threeyear term on the NDHB in 2007–2010, she was then honoured to be publicly elected in 2013. Raised in Ruawai, married to Maungakaramea dairy farmer Rex Buisman, Debbie is devoted to Northland and is focussed on making sure we have a quality public health system that services the needs of all Northlanders. Debbie describes the role on the NDHB as challenging, rewarding and sometimes frustrating because the health dollar only stretches so far. She also says it is satisfying to be part of a group ensuring the future of Health Services in Northland. “One of her major highlights which demonstrated the value and effectiveness of local governance was NDHB firmly choosing to retain both the food and linen contracts. Going against the ‘greater good focus’ national supply programmes, favouring a continued local supply, which has both economic and food security benefits for Northland,” said Ms Evans. Debbie is CEO of Kaipara Community Health Trust and has significant governance training through NZ Institute of Directors. Her voluntary

Following tracks of a legend Joel Hilliam and the team he works beside at Newman Engineering are used to solving problems with metal, intelligence and hard work.

u by Andy Bryenton

That’s exactly the spirit which propelled famous Kiwi racer Burt Munro to glory with the ‘world’s fastest Indian’ — and now Joel is following in Burt’s tracks, taking to the beach on this fire-breathing super modified GSXR. Hitting speeds over 200kph on sand is no trifling matter, but the Dargaville racer overcame technical gremlins to boost through the pack at his first big race. The plan now — fettle and tune his monster machine with the help of the Newman Engineering ‘brains trust’, ready to unleash even more horsepower in next year’s season. Beach racing has a long history in New Zealand, and fans of Mr Munro’s exploits will recall his epic runs on bikes like his famous Indian Scout as well as a series of Ariel Square Fours. Modern beach racers fall into two camps — those who favour beefed-up dirt bikes by the likes of KTM and Yamaha, and those who modify powerful street bikes with custom wheels, extended swingarms

People moving north from the big city will find a great lifestyle here in the Kaipara. But if those thinking of joining us in the sunny north were to ask for one piece of advice from locals, it would likely be about tackling our big rural lawns. Just as a little chainsaw fit for cutting kindling is outmoded by the tasks involved on a farm, so too is a push mower the wrong tool for taming a lifestyle block or rural homestead. As they say, if you’re going to trade up, trade up once and comprehensively. That’s why it’s a good idea to take a look at a Grasshopper zero turn mower if your back yard is more paddock than patio. The design philosophy of the Grasshopper company is similar to that of the creators of the original Jeep — keep it easy to use, easy to maintain and reliable as a Swiss watch. Ease of access to all those serviceable parts is half of the engineering here, and the other half is sheer rugged toughness, with a rigid frame and double layered cutting deck made of high grade steel and coated in extra hard chipresistant paint. Grasshopper mowers were early developers of the zero-turn design, and today they offer two variants to the Kiwi market — both a MidMount and FrontMount deck options in side or

rear discharge. The MidMount mower is more compact and deploys the cutting deck directly under the operator, while the FrontMount model is drive shaft powered with the deck placed in front of the machine. This allows trimming under overhanging foliage as well as the ability to tilt up for easy cleaning and maintenance. If you have a large lawn to deal with, and the thought of pushing a tiny single-blade mower is painful to contemplate, consider the ‘Cadillac of lawn care’ before you buy. ¢

WINNER!

and more to grip the sand and provide stability. Joel’s machine falls firmly in the second category, and began its life as an 1100cc ‘street fighter’. Careful testing and many practise runs (at safer than race speed) have led to an evolved shape, rider position and control layout, making this a perfect weapon for top velocity on sand. ¢

New cafe at the junction u by Ann Morgan

David and Melanie Jordan are the owners of the new T Junction Cafe on the corner of State Highway 1 and State Highway 12 where the Swinging Cow cafe used to be. Originally from the United Kingdom and with many years’ experience in the hospitality industry, the couple owned a bar in Auckland but wanted to get away from the fast paced life. “We have friends in Ruakaka and we went to visit them, saw this building and decided to take a chance. We leased it from the owners and set about starting our new venture,” said David. “We always thought it was a fantastic spot.

There was a lot of work to do to get it ready but it is all worth it.” The cafe officially opened on Sunday September 4 and has been busy ever since. All food is made on-site except the pies which come from Real Town Pies in Maungaturoto and the custard slice. Breakfast fare and burgers, hot meals including braised lamb shanks and oxtails, to cabinet food with sandwiches, salad and rolls along with a great p David and Melanie Jordan — owners of the T Junction Cafe on the corner of State Highways 1 and 12
